Summer evenings in Florence were occasionally shattered by brief spectacular thunderstorms. This was painted with the palette knife and a brush dragged through the thick paint to suggest the rain sheeting down. For this sort of oil study I like to paint on a heavily textured watercolour paper sealed with a Liquitex or Gamblin ground. It allows me to create textures not unlike my pastels.
