Camellias at Villa Rufolo (2018)
The Villa Rufolo is on the Amalfi Coast. It has both a beautiful garden and stunning location. When Wagner visted he was so overcome by the beauty of the location that he imagined the setting as the garden of Klingsor in the second act of Parsifal. In commemoration, every year the lower garden of Villa Rufolo hosts a Wagnerian concert.
The camellias show the power of Old Holland paints to provide incredible depth of colour and a velvety softness.
The brightly lit courtyard is painted in thick impasto with an Impressionist feel.
