Goya 1 (2013)
Goya was one of those painters who shattered past practice. The Prado has a wonderful collection of his works climaxing in the great black paintings – searing works showing a man growing old with few illusions. The sculpture is outside the Prado and I was able to draw it from the elevated road outside so that it was on my eye level. I have worked hard over recent years to show personality through the body – often from behind – rather than just through the face. This was a theme in my recent show. I am very proud of these drawings. They have wide white mounts and simple black frames. Together with its pair, or singly, they look dramatic against a white wall – will suit modern minimalism or a more traditional interior.
