Goya 2 (2013)
Goya died the same year as Beethoven – 1828 – and their lives had many parallels although they never met, and might not have even been aware of each other. Both were dramatic innovators, both had high hopes for the enlightenment and Napoleon in particular, both were deeply disillusioned, both became profoundly deaf and withdrew from society, and both made great art in their last dark years. From this angle the sculpture outside the Prado underlined those links visually – probably completely unintentionally. With its pair – Goya 1 – or by itself this is a handsome drawing. Again mounted in white with a plain black frame.
