Pink Gerbera (2022)
This is painted in oil glazes designed to produce a watercolour feel to complement the careful graphite drawing of the other flowers. I work by initially producing a watercolour and pencil study at one third scale and having that blown up as giclee art print on conservation quality paper. This produces a lovely grainy image. It is mounted on board then sealed so I can paint over the key elements of the image in oil, make changes and enhancements while ensuring the whole image is (reasonably) robust and wipeable/washable. This process delivers a large, light work which does not need to be under glass, which is uniquely different from the study and is not difficult to hang – but at the same time preserves a lot of the freshness of the original study.
