Yellow Poppy (2022)
This mixed media painting is 2m by 2m. It makes a bold statement with its simple, clear composition and the restriction to yellow and black and white. I did a quarter scale study in pastel and charcoal, had this copied and a large scale giclee art print made on top quality watercolour paper. This in turn was sealed with a clear acrylic matte sealant, and mounted on an archival/conservation board to provide a sound base for further work in oil paint and a cleanable finish. The poppy was then repainted, and in part re-imagined, in oil and there were further adjustments in oil to the background. A minimal black silhouette frame then ensured a light weight, easily hung work which could wiped to remove soiling – should that occur. Both this and the companion piece – the pink gerbera – sold in the first five minutes the show was open even though they were the most expensive paintings offered at $4500 and $2500 respectively. I was approached by several people who wanted to commission similar works. I am currently working on one of these.
